Staunton Virginia & The Shenandoah Valley Area History

In The Heart Of The Shenandoah Valley
Located Between The Blue Ridge Mountains & The Alleghany Mountains

The city of Staunton was founded in the 1740s. Today
it is widely known for being the birthplace of the 28th U.S. President, Woodrow Wilson, but there's a lot
more to our history than simply that.

Staunton played a pivotal role during the Civil War years when the Shenandoah Valley served as the "Breadbasket of the Confederacy."
While most battles were being fought north or west of the town, it was the presence of the Virginia Central Railroad that provided a vital link between the Valley and eastern Virginia, making Staunton an important supply depot for the Confederacy.

In 1908, Staunton was the first city in the world to adopt a city manager form of government, an outgrowth of the Progressive movement.

Since then, this organizational style has been instituted in many locations across the country.

Walking tours through 5 national historic districts transport visitors through Staunton's 250-year heritage.
